Character History
Before The Minutemen
Hollis Mason was born in the state of Montana in 1916. In 1928, his father moved the family to New York, ignoring his own father's warning of moral ruination for the family. Hollis' father started working for a man named Moe Vernon at an auto repair shop, where Hollis would enjoy the many bizarre novelty items Moe kept in his drawers.
One day, in 1933, when Hollis was 17, Moe Vernon got a letter from his wife telling him that she had taken all of his money and left him for one of his workers. Moe announced the affair to the whole workshop, but instead of comforting, he got only laughter due to the rubber breasts he was wearing and the loud Wagner music coming out from his office. In between the laughter was Hollis'. The song that was playing was The Ride of the Valkyries, which would always the saddest thing Hollis could think of.
In 1938, Hollis graduated from the police academy and entered the New York Police Department the following year, wanting to contribute to the law. The previous year, when the first issue of Action Comics was published, Hollis began developing an interest in superheroes. When the first case of masked vigilantilism appeared in the headlines, Hollis decided he wanted to fight crime.
After three months of training at the Police Gymnasium, he felt it was the right time to go out into the night wearing his costume, which cost him great difficulty to design. The name Nite Owl came from a fellow officer who constantly invited Hollis for a drink after exercising, only to be turned down because he wanted to "be in bed early".
Hollis became the Nite Owl early into 1939. His first few feats were not at all extraordinery but they did arouse media interest because of the costume and protecting fad that had started. And thus, the group called The New Minute Men of America was conceived by Captain Metropolis, who was recruiting costumed adventurers for the struggle across the nation.
